In Canada

1- Last week the retailing giant Wallmart got final approval to open a bank in Canada , Providing entry to an industry that has been criticized for high prices and lack of competition.

2- Bank of Canada raised rates by 0.25% but in their statement said due to uncertainty about global economic out look, further rate hikes are not a given and

will be weighed against domestic and global data. That statement caused Canadian dollar to go down because the markets were forecasting more rate

hikes in near future were guaranteed.

 

3- Economic growth came at 6.1% in the first quarter coming after a 4.9% growth in the 4th quarter of 2009. Major cause of growth was a 24% rise in residential investment, 4% rise in consumer spending a 0.4% rise in business expenditure. Going fore ward economic activity is supposed to slow down due to cooling of housing market and consumer spending . GDP growth forecasted to be 2.5% to 3% for the rest of 2010.

4- Employment record showed 25,000 jobs were added to economy in May following an impressive 109,000 jobs added in April. Most jobs were full time.

Un employment rates is still at 8.1% but is expected to go down to 7.5% by end of 2011.

In U.S :

 

1- On Firday the down lost 323 points due to the disappointing job numbers. The expectation was that the private sector will add good number of jobs to the market. but when the data came in it showed that out of the 431,000 jobs created in May, 411,000 was temporary Government jobs which will unwind over June-September. Only 41,000 of the new jobs were private sector.
